The BetterBin competition asks: How can we create a practical and efficient litter basket for New York City that keeps the streets clean, makes the best use of our limited streetscape, and better serves both sanitation workers and the public at large? We have just completed the first stage of this two-stage international product design competition. In Stage I, we received nearly 200 submissions from six continents. A jury reviewed all submissions and selected three finalists to move on to Stage II, where each of three finalists have received a $40,000 award to produce 12 prototypes that will be tested in New York City neighborhoods over the summer in 2019. At the conclusion of the prototype testing period, the jury will select one winning design to replace New York City’s current steel mesh litter basket. |
